Have you ever longed for a glimpse inside the historic houses you drive by every day? Many of our neighbors have graciously agreed to open their homes on Sunday, December 14, 2014 from Noon to 5:00 PM, giving us all the chance to indulge our curiosity and get a head start on the holiday season.

The 2014 West End Holiday Homes Tour starts at the Old Winston Social Club, 1131 Burke Street, where you can buy tickets and pick up a program. From there you can walk, drive, or take a free shuttle. Camel City Carriage Company will provide free horse drawn carriage rides for visitors between some tour houses.

This year the tour includes seven homes, one condominium, and an art studio in a historic building. Four of the tour homes are highlighted here.

Coleman HouseJohn E. Coleman House
533 Summit Street – Built in 1902, the Coleman House is a monumental Colonial Revival dwelling, one of the most sophisticated houses of its period remaining in Winston-Salem. Interior details, include paneled wainscoting, mantels, sliding pocket doors, and beveled glass, have survived intact.

Willis House

Meade H. Willis House
813 West End Boulevard – The Willis House is a large, two-story brick house of simple Colonial Revival design built in 1928. It has a central entrance with sidelights and Classical surround and a full-length front porch with paired Tuscan posts.

Ogburn House

Sihon Cicero Ogburn House
1205 Clover Street – An impressive Colonial Revival dwelling, built in 1914, showing some Craftsman style influence. The spacious interior has Colonial Revival and Craftsman mantels. Of particular significance is the wainscoting in the hall and dining room with well preserved, simulated leather-embossed papers.

Hall House

Shirley E. Hall House
1144 W. Fourth Street – Offices of KLM Law. The Hall House is a 1908 Neo-Classical Revival structure which stands majestically on a hill overlooking the intersection of Fourth
and First Streets.
